WELCOME

Cancer is overwhelming, and figuring out what's real and what's not feels impossible. I created this blog to translate complex cancer research into plain language—so you can understand your diagnosis, your options, and what comes next.

Welcome, and let's make sense of cancer together.

About

Becky Howard, PhD

I'm Becky, and I help people make sense of cancer. Here's the truth: cancer is complicated. Really complicated. And when you're diagnosed, you're expected to make life-changing decisions while you're scared, overwhelmed, and drowning in medical terminology you've never heard before. I have a PhD in cancer biology, which means I've spent decades studying exactly how cancer works—the biology, the treatments, the clinical trials, all of it. But what taught me the most wasn't my research. It was walking alongside friends and family through their own cancer diagnoses. That's when I saw the real problem. The amount of reading, research, and detective work it takes just to understand what's real and what's not is staggering. My loved ones would come to me with questions their doctors didn't have time to answer, printouts from the internet that were half-true at best, and a desperate need for someone to just explain things in plain language. I loved helping them. I loved taking the complex science I'd spent years learning and translating it into something that made sense—something that helped them feel less lost and more confident in their decisions. But I could only help the people in my immediate circle. And I kept thinking: there are so many others out there who need this same kind of support. That's why I started this blog. What's missing is someone who can take the complex science and translate it into plain language—without dumbing it down, without false hope, but also without unnecessary fear. My mission: Help you understand what's happening in your body, what your treatment options actually mean, and what to expect as you move from diagnosis through treatment and beyond. This blog is for: Newly diagnosed patients trying to understand their pathology reports People weighing treatment options and wanting to know what each one really does Caregivers who want to better support their loved ones Anyone who's tired of sifting through endless medical information trying to figure out what's actually true You deserve to understand what's happening to you. You deserve clear answers. And you deserve someone who respects your intelligence while making the complex understandable. That's what I'm here for. Welcome to Making Sense of Cancer.
